Cor blimey, fish ‘n’ chips, a nice cuppa rosie with the old Queen Muvva, gawd bless ‘er. Britain, doncha love it? Well probably not as much as the man behind this site.
Britain Express is the labour of love of self-confessed anglophile David Ross. The site has everything you need for a visit to dear old Blighty including where to stay, what to do and an introduction to the history and culture of the country. It deals with each of the UK regions from the Highlands to Cornwall, and then highlights the main attractions of abbeys, gardens, museums, stately homes and so on. The ‘City Guides’, covering London, York and Oxford are incredibly thorough, and offer a number of different perspectives. It would be great if this coverage could extend to more cities though.
The ‘History’ section aims to cram over 6000 years’ worth of people and events into some sort of web-friendly form - and I have to say that it does it rather well. I love the bit covering culture…. ‘what culture?’ I thought. But when you see it set out like this, it makes your patriotic heart start fluttering. One thing I have always been very aware of is the beauty of Britain’s countryside, and there is a large section covering National Parks and the trails that span the length and breadth of the country. Throw in a guide to B&Bs, instant car hire and an explanation of our run down rail and tube systems, and you get a site that’s more thorough than most official tourist board offerings.
